Food charity among recipients of Lottery Fund 'green grants'

A charity that provides food to disadvantaged families has been awarded a lottery grant.

The Devon and Cornwall Food Association, which has bases in Exeter and Plymouth, has been handed £5,100 by the Big Lottery Fund.

The charity, which diverts good food, which would otherwise be thrown away, towards needy local people, will use the money to train staff and buy new equipment.

A total of 57 "environmental" groups across the South West are sharing almost £477,400 in grants.

Mark Cotton, the Big Lottery Fund's head of the South West region, said: "These green grants awarded money demonstrate how small changes can lead to a big difference.

"Whether it involves people learning to grow their own food and simultaneously enjoy being outside in the fresh air, undertaking small changes to make community buildings more energy efficient, or encouraging people to recycle and cut down on waste, these awards will all do their bit to benefit the environment and the communities living in them."
