Forces national recruitment drive ‘TA Live’ comes to Exeter
The Armed Forces launched a ground-breaking recruitment campaign last week as they look to increase the number of trained Reservists to 35,000 across all three services, with 30,000 from the Territorial Army.
To achieve this, £1.8billion is to be invested in additional equipment, training and support but the brand new advertising campaign 'TA Live' sits at the forefront of the initiative. £1.6million has been poured into television adverts that are being aired during some of the nation's most popular programmes. The commercials will be broadcast live from live operations in Afghanistan, capturing TA soldiers going about their everyday duties working alongside their Regular Army counterparts.
Alongside this, regional events are being held nationally where members of the public can find out more about life in the TA. On Saturday, Exeter's city centre was overrun with men in uniform all out to spread the word. The picturesque Cathedral Green played host to paintballing and an inflatable assault course, while Bedford Square sat in the shadow of an enormous climbing wall.
Representatives from local TA unit, 6 Rifles based at Wyvern Barracks on Barrack Road were on hand to tell the citizens of Exeter why they should join their ranks. Being a Reservist is an exciting and challenging opportunity and Platoon Commander of B Company 6 Rifles, Colour Sergeant John Justice, is urging everyone to give it a try. "It's a great second career. It's great for personal development; the TA will put you through a lot of leadership courses and open up opportunities you would never get in civilian life."

Unlike the Regular Army, Reservists are not required to serve in Afghanistan or overseas although you can volunteer to do so and since 2003 there have been over 25,000 Reservist mobilisations. Fresh back from his own tour of duty, Rifleman Dom Wright speaks very highly of the experience "If you want to go, you put your name down to go and if you're chose to go, you go. They're trying to get more TA soldiers to mobilise at the moment and it was a nice experience".
If you missed the recruiting team on Saturday, you can find out more by heading for the Armed Forces Careers Office at the top of Sidwell Street or search 'Territorial Army' online.
