Freak goal is a real Reds shocker
I HAVE just witnessed what could have been an absolute disaster for Liverpool FC — the goal that went in off a red beach ball on Saturday at Sunderland was ridiculously given.
I think the referee is probably lucky that it is at this stage of the season and a decision like that looks to have no consequence — but imagine if Liverpool were neck and neck with another club for the title in April when that goal decides the outcome of the title.
Give credit to Rafa Benitez, who took it on the chin, but I wonder if the scenario I just explained were the case, there might have been a different reaction.
After listening to the post match interview with Benitez, he must be livid how many times he gets asked about his title aspirations after a defeat.
I think Liverpool are only seven points off top spot and, to be honest, a lot of the so-say top sides are going to get beaten. What it does is make the Premier League so much more competitive, which is great for the game. While I am on my soapbox, if David Beckham is fit and playing well, Fabio Capello will take him to the World Cup. If he isn't fit or not playing well he won't go — Fabio Capello won't let any sentiment come in the way of him trying to win the World Cup for England. I think we are one of half a dozen sides who are capable of winning it.
Oh, by the way, Beckham to my mind is a rock certainty to go to South Africa because he still is a very good player and his imminent move to AC Milan should help him no end.
Congratulations go to racing driver Jenson Button and the Braun team who have come from nowhere to win the Formula 1 championship. This could be the start of a good year for British sport.
