An international best-selling author will kick-off a series of lectures at a Westcountry university about the Mafia.
The free public lectures at the University of Exeter's Cornwall Campus will look at the origins and also the grip that the notorious crime network holds over modern America.

John Dickie, whose latest book Blood Brotherhoods has been an international success, will give the first lecture on Monday, focusing on the birth of the Mafia.

He is a professor in Italian Studies at University College London, whose research expertise focuses on the Sicilian Mafia.
On Monday March 11, independent scholar and best-selling writer Dr Mike Dash will discuss the origins and early evolution of the American Mafia.
He will unravel some of the half-truths and misunderstandings about the birth of Italy's most infamous export to the New World, organisers say.
In May, subject to confirmation, Professor Frederico Varese, Professor of Sociology at Oxford, will be looking at present day networks of organised crime – where they originated, and how they expand and reproduce.
Talks will be held in the Chapel lecture theatre, Tremough Campus, Penryn.
