Friends' final farewell to popular ex-marine John Roberts
TRIBUTES have been paid at a funeral service to motorcyclist John Roberts who was killed in a road crash.
Dozens of mourners attended the cremation at Exeter of the 28-year-old father-of-two and former Royal Marine.
As well as his wife Nadine, others at the service included many friends he had made at Tiverton where he set up a business as a tattooist.
Colleagues from the Royal Marines, dressed in battle fatigues, were also present.
Mr Roberts, originally from South Africa, lived in Exmouth before moving to Exebridge, near Dulverton, after he left the marines in March.
He was riding his black, Suzuki GSXR 750cc machine on the A396 at Bampton when he was in collision with a red VW Polo at 4.20pm on Saturday, October 16.
Attempts to resuscitate him at the crash scene were attempted by a passer-by after he was given instructions over a mobile phone by ambulance paramedics.
When this failed he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Since his death his premises, Tiverton Tattoos, in Fore Street, has been turned into a shrine.
The site where the accident happened outside Rose Cottage on the A396 has also been decked with floral tributes in his memory.
On Mr Roberts's Facebook page tributes have already been left with sentiments of support for his family.
A solitary wreath of red roses had been placed on the coffin as it pulled up in a hearse at the crematorium chapel.
Another of white and yellow roses and lilies lay by the side of the casket as six pall bearers waited to carry it into the service.
One poignant message said: "Our thoughts are always with you."
Another spray of flowers left at the entrance to the chapel read: "So unbelievable, why? We will never forget you."
Friends spoke of a popular and friendly man who had set up his new business after leaving the Royal Marines.
Mourners spoke of his friendliness to everyone he met and included Michele Holme, whose son Sam worked with Mr Roberts as an apprentice.
"His death has touched everyone," she said. "His tragic death has been so sad."
Another friend, Donna Woodland, said: "Everyone is in shock. His death was so sudden."
Following the death, Helen Sexon, who runs an adjacent clothing shop, Design Works, agreed to pass on cards and floral tributes of condolence from friends to the family.
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to come forward. They are also calling for people with information about the crash to contact them on 08452 7774445 quoting log 725 of October 16.
