FIVE Exmouth Harriers crossed the estuary to tackle Dawlish Coasters' Oh my Obelisk! race – a demanding, hilly and off-road 11-miler that took runners out of Dawlish towards the obelisk.

Jon Garrity was the first Harrier home in 1hr 19mins 30secs, which put him 19th overall and ninth in the male over-40 field.

Richard Bishop finished in 1:20.07 for 21st spot and David Wright was 49th and eighth male over-50 in 1:25.21.

Female Harriers Jane Macdonald and Sue Hill were evenly matched, with Macdonald finishing in 1:47.09 for 171st place and Hill in 1.48.21 for 181st.

Earlier this month, John Perrett and Jamie Palmer tackled the twin race Axmouth Challenge multi-terrain event.

Perrett was first overall in the five-mile race – quite an achievement for a runner in his 70s – and Palmer finished fifth in the 10-miler with a time of 1:03.12, five minutes behind winner Steve Osbourne.

AXE VALLEY RUNNERS

Sunday morning saw 97 runners race from Southleigh to Branscombe on a nominal 14 or nine-mile run – the Any Which Way You Can.

With no fixed routes, the shortest known way was a touch over 13 miles and the longest about 17 miles.

AVR's Jon Day – who had poured hours of research into the quickest route – and Alex Todd were the long route winners, taking two hours exactly.

Garry Perratt, Chris Keefe, Simon and Phil Bayliss were 10th in 2:24, while Graham Newton, Ian Apps, Andy Bowman, Dave Thomas, Eleanor Wood, Sam Anning and Klara Pritasilova were 18th in 2:31.

Janette Mack and Marilyn Hughes ran the shorter version and were fifth in 2:24.

HALDON TRAIL RUNNERS

Nathan White completed the Cambridge Park Run in a very speedy 19.47 on Saturday.

Karen Watkins completed the Gloucester marathon in 3:47.21 a day later.
