THE life of the world's first and only openly gay professional footballer will be celebrated at an event to recognise lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) culture, heritage and history in Exeter.

Justin Fashanu played for a variety of football clubs between 1978 and 1997, and frequently visited Exeter from 1991 to 1993 while playing for Torquay United. He killed himself in May 1998.

The display of memorabilia about his life can be seen at Exeter Central Library from 10.30am to 3.30pm on Saturday, February 28.

The exhibition forms part of Exeter LGBT Pride, which is part of LGBT History Month. Other activities include a heritage walk, formal discussion, an art project and a storyteller to entertain children.
