Gill shares victory at Torquay

EXETER'S Chris Gill was joint-winner with Jon Axford in the Kenyon Trophy at the recent Mizuno Devon Alliance event at Torquay Golf Club.

The pair won by two shots over Crediton's Barry Austin and former Fingle Glen player Paul Hendriksen.

Hendriksen — now at Churston — partnered Neil Jackson to second place in the pro-am competition, won by home pro Tom Hiscock.

Torquay's M Passmore and R Corbett won the am-am, two points ahead of Okehampton pair P Skidmore and M Hill.

Nathan Whitehouse and Heath Ellis won the men's Summer Foursomes title at Tiverton after beating Dave Curl and Ben Hearn 1-up in a rollercoaster final.

Assistant pro Curl and Hearn went 2-up thanks to a par on the fourth and a birdie on the fifth.

But Whitehouse and Ellis won the next three holes as their opponents found trouble on the sixth and eighth.

With things still close on the 18th, Whitehouse sealed victory.

Kelvin and Matt Woodgate became the first pair to book their place in the knockout stages of the Winter Foursomes after winning the opening medal qualifier.

The Woodgates carded a nett 68.5 to pip Graham Clarke and Mike Cottrell, who came in with a 69.

Chem Austin and Mark Dakin had shot a 68 but were disqualified because the latter had used a new driver from the pro shop with protective tape over the clubface.

Maureen Postles and Sue Persey led the way in the ladies' July Par competition on -1, with Sue Norris on -3 and Anne Franklin on -4.

Dave Holland plundered 42 stableford points to win the veterans' Stan Sage Trophy, which reduced his handicap from 17 to 15, while Ed Tansey finished second with 41.

Barry Pomeroy won Division One of the veterans' stableford with 39 points, from Johnny Harker, who scored 38.

In Division Two, vice-captain Dave Cann left the field behind with 39 points, with Ron Bates way behind on 35.

The Wednesday stableford saw Ben Harding finish first with 39 points on countback from Matt Baker in Division One, while in Division Two Peter Farmer led with 39 points from John Riley on 35.

Jean Dyer and Ann Ward had a classic battle in the ladies section of the President's Bowl, with Dyer eventually winning 1-up.

The Foursomes Cup was also a close run event, with Jan Foster and partner Jean Halliday winning 2&1 over Jo Stokes and Joyce Wills.

In the men's annual Daily Mail Foursomes, Tony Sluman and partner Pete Morris ran away in first place with a four under par nett 65.

Barry Pomeroy and Mike Jolly were joint second with a level par nett 69.

Rising star Ben Andrews won the junior section Chris Cole Cup with an outstanding 43 points.

Sandy Urquhart was a single point adrift in second place, while Sam Hooper won Division One of the midweek open medalford on countback after Hooper, Tony Stoyle, Graham Bulford and Keith Barzey all carded nett 15.

Nett 15 also earned Terry Thorne first place in Division Two ahead of Harry Coleman (16), Donna Pearse (16) and Charles Wray (17).

Hooper triumphed again in the weekend stableford, with 39 points at the top of Division One ahead of Luke Burchell and Andy Skinner on 38.

Terry Webster won Division Two with 40 points from Richard Hayman on 38, while Steve Taylor, Martin Hobbs and Allan Vincent all carded 35 points in Division Three.

The mixed Greensomes Stableford was played off half combined handicap, with Donna Pearse and Paul Stevens scoring 40 points for victory.

Sam Brooks and Andy Rogers finished second by a single point, while Ann and Chris Hazelwood were third with 37 points.

Martin Jewell won Division Three with the best score of the day in the November Medal. He scored a nett 60, while Division One winner Barry Down carded 64, along with second-placed Andy Shapland and third-placed Mark Wonnacott.

Division Two was won by Paul MacDonald with a nett 66, with Graham Mitchell second on 67.

Mark Quick was second in Division Three with a nett 61 followed in third by Ron Copeland with a net 62.

Wally Phillips was overall winner of the Seniors' Hip Hooray End of Season Stableford, played off half handicap.

Phillips won Division One with a score of 37 points ahead of James Downing with 34 in second and John Cross on 33.

Division Two was won by Eric Parkes on 36 points on countback from Danny Enright, with David Webster third with 31.

Exeter Golf & Country Club beat Woodbury Park at Axe Cliff Golf Club in the East Devon League.

The city club won 3-2 as they finished off their East Devon League fixture list.

The final league table shows holders Fingle Glen retaining the title by just two points.

Sidmouth ended in second place after an excellent 2009 season, with Exminster just one point behind them in third.
