Gillingham 2 Exeter City 3- Full time report
A header from Jamie Cureton four minutes from time gave Exeter City a memorable victory away at league leaders Gillingham on Tuesday night.
The former Reading striker looked to have blown City's chances of taking all three points a minute earlier when he scuffed a penalty kick into the grateful arms of Gillingham keeper Stuart Nelson.
However, he was in the right place to nod in Liam Sercombe's left-wing cross to end a pulsating second half of football at the Prestfield Stadium.
Gillingham took the lead in the third minute when Chris Whelpdale was played in on goal and he slotted a shot under Artur Krysiak. However Alan Gow, who was lively throguhout the match, won and took a 26th minute free-kick that he curled into the top right hand corner to level the scores.
Gillingham got back on top as the half wore on though. Deon Burton was unlucky not to connect with a cross to the far post and Danny Coles had to be alert to head away from under his crossbar following a header from Charlie Lee.
However, after the break it was the visitors who did the pressing. Cureton had a shot blocked for a corner from close range. Then he fired home from inside the six yard box in the 54th minute, following Gow's cross from the left.
Gillingham flooded men forward to try and get an equaliser and they were rewarded when Danny Jackman's 30-yard drive sailed past Krysiak and into the top right hand corner of the goal.
However, it was to be City's and Cureton's night in the end as, even though he missed from 12 yards after Jimmy Keohane was brought down in the box, the veteran striker was in the right place to head home the winning goal.
