Golf round-up
Exeter assistant Sean Mason has not been able to recapture the form that took him to the top of the West Region order of merit two years ago.
But the stylish 28-year-old has been showing glimpses of his old form recently.
In the Titleist-Footjoy League at Stinchcombe Hill in Gloucestershire, Hemstock leapt to the top of the leaderboard to share top place with Mullion's Chris Ramsden.
He made his score coming home after turning in 31 with birdies at the first and sixth and a bogey to the par three ninth.
He then made birdies at 11 and 16 before clinching top spot with an eagle three at the 476-yard 18th.
This also helped him and Exeter's Andy Parker, the former greenkeeper at Downes Crediton who plays off six, to take the team prize with 46 points. Mason collected £368 for his efforts.
His Exeter colleague Chris Gill finished fifth on 68, worth £118.
Gill went even closer at Tehidy Park where he was runner up, one shot behind Nick Rogers (Falmouth), after a two-under-par 69.
Gill faced a long wait in the clubhouse until late starter Rogers appeared. Gill's reward was £566 while his boss, Exeter club pro Gary Milne, made a rare appearance to share third on 70 worth £365.
Ross Troake, who was once one of the most feared West Region pros, won the team prize in the Woodbury Park pro-am.
Now teaching at Exminster, Troake's team of Ryan Mapp, Lisa Pearce and Nino Asante carded 15 under par 131 to beat Gill's Diageo team of Neill McDonald, Russell Jones and Andy Cunliffe on countback. Both players earned £163.
Mason and Gill both carded par rounds of 70 to share fourth place in the Filton Centenary Pro-am.
Tiverton's Hannah Grant won a prize for recording the lowest round of the week as a closing three-under-par 69 catapulted her up to 13th place in the English Women's Strokeplay Championship at Enmore Park.
Grant, who is also a member at Enmore, was last out on the opening day and started with a creditable 76 in wet and windy conditions.
She followed it up with another 76 on day two to comfortably make the cut in 12th place.
She struggled with her putter in the third round and an 80 saw her fall away to 22nd spot.
But after some work on the putting green at lunchtime, the 21-year-old returned to the course determined to improve her position.
She started soundly with pars on the first three holes and then birdied the 4th, 6th and 7th to move to three under.
She had bogeys on the 8th and 11th but a birdie on the 16th brought her back to two under playing the par-5 18th.
Grant hit her approach to four feet with a 4-iron from 205 yards but the eagle putt just slipped by and she had to settle for a 69.
The round cut 0.7 off her handicap, which saw her return to scratch.
Grant's mum Sheila said: "The course record for ladies at Enmore is 71, which illustrates how well Hannah played."
Brian Westlake hit a nett 66 to win the men's Kennard Cup at Tiverton. The 19-handicapper had to play off the maximum of 18 and has now been cut to 17.
Birdies on the 3rd and 4th helped Westlake secure a one-shot victory over Phil Moulding, while Simon Woodgate, Jim Bray and Dean Farmer all finished on 68.
