GREEN teamers will have seen from the league table before the half-term break that we are celebrating another acorn.

Green teams at Countess Wear have successfully completed their first tree and are hard at work on their second.

The school was presented with its cheque for £150 by Paul Willis, of Gregory Distribution, at a recent school assembly.

And to mark their achievement, the team was also presented with an Indian bean tree to plant in the school grounds.

The special assembly was also attended by the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cllr John Winterbottom, who told pupils he was very impressed by the work the Green teams at the school had done over the past 18 months.

Over that period about 40 pupils have been involved in the Green team and what a lot they have achieved!

They have looked at ways of saving electricity, using energy meters around the school to measure the amount used.

They aimed to get staff and pupils to switch off lights and computers in classrooms when they were not being used.

They have also been concentrating on growing their own food.

They have created their own compost from lunchtime left overs and grown — and eaten — their own vegetables. They were especially fond of the baked potatoes they grew and cooked themselves.

And they looked at ways of saving water.

Now they are considering spending time to concentrate on trees and improving the habitat for wildlife in the school grounds.

With the money they have just received for completing their first tree they are planning to buy more trees and plant them in their wildlife area. The aim is to help not just the wildlife but also to improve the look of the school grounds in general.

And the question now is who will be next to get an acorn in the table?

Next week there will be a special Green team pull-out supplement to commemorate the Acorn Awards, which are being held in the city tomorrow.

It will be packed with pictures from the day so don't miss it!
