Harriers in the hunt for league and cup honours
EXETER Harriers' women face a momentous day of action today.
Team manager Dave Robinson has been forced to juggle his resources as the club contest the British Athletics League 10 in 100 Cup for the first time, while also closing in on the Division Three title of the Southern Women's League.
British international Sophie Skinner leads the squad heading to Copthall Stadium in London for the cup final, with Jenny Robinson, Rebecca Chapman, Anna Bowyer, Leonie Rowe and Emily Weeks in support.
At the same time another squad, including Beth Skinner, Chloe Gimbuta, Emily Bliss and Anna Rust, will contest the fifth and final Southern League match at Exeter Arena knowing that the title is within their grasp.
"We have had to split the squad between the two matches which has stretched us to the limit," said Robinson, who will be at Exeter, while Gordon Seward takes the team to the capital.
"But I am confident we can still win the league title and do well in the cup, although originally we had hopes to contest the Plate competition. It is going to be a very busy day."
In the league Exeter are in the happy position of enjoying a 35-point lead over Thurrock at the top of the table, with third-placed Woking a further 24 points behind.
With the top three earning promotion, barring disaster the Harriers should be celebrating a superb title success this weekend.
A matching cup victory will be harder to achieve against strong teams from Cardiff, Rugby & Northampton and Blackpool, but there is little doubt the women have been energised by the success of the men as the club confirms its status as the top track and field outfit in the Westcountry.
Exeter Harriers' Mark Cowen is in Edinburgh for the World Duathlon Championships today.
Cowen, who is the events manager at the Ironbridge Runner and helps organise the Great West Run, will contest the 30 to 35 age group event.
