THE South West's only specialist rock and pop music college is to be opened by Hawkwind's legendary guitarist and founder member Dave Brock.

The Academy of Music and Sound in Coombe Street, Exeter, will be officially opened on Monday, July 19, at 7pm.

Dave and his band Hawkwind are celebrating 40 years in the music business with a release of their new album Crystal Entity and a lavish stage tour.

Hawkwind created the genre of Space Rock and are credited as being among the most influential British groups ever.

Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Greg Sheldon will join the Hawkwind guitarist as he cuts the ribbon at the grand opening ceremony.

There is an open invitation to all Exeter musicians to come along on the night.

The academy will have live music in four rooms, demonstrations in the recording studio, and guests can network with other musicians from all over the West Country and view this new music complex in the heart of the city.

Entrance and refreshments are free; just turn up on the night. If you wish you can bring an instrument and join in.

The Academy in Exeter is in its sixth year of providing fully funded courses for 16 to 19-year-olds, private lessons and specialist evening classes.

Centre manager Steve Ryan said: "I believe this fantastic new facility will provide a massive boost to the musical life of the whole of the South West region.

"With rehearsal rooms, a professional recording studio and four large air-conditioned performance spaces we can offer world-class tuition and recording on your doorstep.

"It's an honour and a privilege to have a musician of such massive influence as Dave Brock at our grand opening", Steve added.
