A GROUP of young men have engineered a bright future for themselves thanks to an apprenticeship scheme run by South West Highways Training.

The apprentices have spent the past two years learning both the theoretical and practical aspects of highway maintenance work, from traffic management to road construction. Having completed the course, they were awarded their NVQ Level 2 professional qualifications.

One of the apprentices, Sam Atwill, 22, from Exeter, who works for Glendinning, was recently named the most promising apprentice in the South West by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association.

Sam said: "I left school at 16 and tried a number of jobs, but when I was offered an apprenticeship at SWH Training's national apprenticeship scheme, I could see a career path opening up for me.

"The course is really thorough, so you leave feeling prepared to go out and put what you've learned into practice."

Ben Pyle, managing director of South West Highways, said: "The skills we are teaching these young men will stand them in good stead and play a vital role in building a bright future for the region. We wish them all the best in their future careers."
