flowers and flowers only can convey the special message of love to your
valentine.
Roses, especially, red and pink roses are the favorites of
lovers on the Valentines Day since the roses have been the symbols of love
right from the Victorian times. But, any red or pink flower is the most common
choice and further there is no steadfast rule as to which flower is to be
gifted on Valentine's Day. You can choose any flower which your soul mate likes
most.
Saint Valentine was said to have demonstrated courage and
valor in helping Christian martyrs being persecuted under Emperor Claudius II
in Rome, during a time when giving any kind of aid to Christians was considered
a crime. Valentinus was arrested and imprisoned for this crime. He was
condemned to death. He was beaten with clubs, stoned and finally beheaded
outside the Flaminian Gate. After his death, this gate was known as Porta
Valentini, later being renamed Porta Popolo.
There is a legend that says while awaiting his execution, he
befriended his jailer's blind daughter whose sight he restored to her.
According to Alfonso Villiegas, in his book "Lives of Saints" the
jailer was Asterios, one of the Emperor's lieutenants. He and his family were
converted to Christianity by St. Valentine, and they were condemned to death by
Claudius II. Furthermore, according to legend, on the eve of Valentinus' death,
he wrote a farewell message to the jailer's daughter and signed it. This is how
Valentines Day evolved.
Gifting flowers dates back to the 1700s when Charles II of
Sweden introduced the Persian custom of the language of flowers to Europe. The
rose has become the traditional Valentine's Day flower. As rose flower has
always been the popular flower, the meaning of the red rose is still well known
as the flower of passion and love. The red rose is also the favorite flower of
Venus, the goddess of love, which helped give the rose its symbolic meaning.
Within roses, there are various factors like colors and numbers of the flowers
that convey specific meanings.
Although roses are the most popular Valentines Day flowers,
such other flowers like lilies, alstroemeria, iris, tulips, daffodils,
hyacinths, carnations, tuberoses, freesias, etc., are also very popular flowers
for gifting on Valinentine's Day. Consider the personal likes and dislikes of
your valentine before you choose a flower for your valentine.

Care for Valentine's Day Flowers by Edna Sherrell Florists -

1. Water is the most vital aspect of flower care. Try to
keep the flowers in water to keep them fresh.
2. Keep the flowers cool. Warm temperatures shorten the life of the blooms.
3. When the flowers start to wilt, remove the stem from the arrangement and
re-cut the stem. Next, submerge the entire flower in warm water.
4. Potted plants are also a popular gift. Like arrangements, keep them in a
cool location and avoid heat drafts or dry air for longer colour.
