DAVID Ward knows a thing or two about how to iron a shirt – he's pressed more than 30,000 of them.

That's no off-the-cuff claim, it's all been part of the job for the part-time employee at a city dry cleaning business.

In fact it takes the blue collar worker less than a minute to remove the creases from a shirt.

And his bosses are so impressed they've just rewarded him for 30 years of pressing service.

David is celebrating his 30th anniversary at Johnson Cleaners in Cowley Bridge Road, Exeter.

The 70-year-old, from Exeter, is now a store assistant with the company. But he originally started work as a dry cleaning assistant when he was just 18.

After a short break, he returned to the company in 1982, and has worked there ever since. David, who used to work full-time, estimates that he has ironed more than 30,000 shirts during his 30 years.

And he has managed to perfect the art, pressing a shirt flawlessly inside 60 seconds.

"I feel so lucky that I've found a job I love," he said. " It would be too hard to pick a particular highlight, as it has all been so enjoyable. Quite a lot has changed since I started in the 1980s, in terms of the processes and technology, however the people I work with and the customers I serve are just as fantastic as they were 30 years ago."

Paul Ogle, managing director of Johnson Cleaners, said: "David is a great example of the dedicated staff that we have working throughout our stores. We would like to thank David for all of his hard work over the years and I am sure his colleagues and customers will join me in congratulating him."

As a thank you for his long service Johnson Cleaners presented David received a £300 shopping voucher.
