Jewellery shines two days in a row with win at Newton Abbot

Victor Dartnall admitted it was against his nature to run a horse two days in a row, but with the handicapper likely to clobber Jewellery with a hefty rise in the weights after her easy win at Fontwell on Sunday, he ran her again at Newton Abbot yesterday.

Those at the races would never have guessed the mare had travelled to Fontwell the day before, when she romped home to a wide-margin victory. She looked a picture in the paddock and Dartnall proved justified in his decision to run her again when she landed her second success, making virtually all the running in the two miles six furlongs novices handicap hurdle and asserting down the home straight.

Jockey Harry Derham said: "For a small mare, she did it brilliantly. Me and Dennis [O'Regan] both said she'd jump a fence one day."

Future plans for the mare, who joined Dartnall at his Barnstaple stables last month, are now in question, with the likely hike in the weights sure to limit her options.

"We'll see what else there is but she has done this very well. I wouldn't normally run a horse two days in a row, but she came out of Fontwell's race so well, we thought we'd take our chance," Dartnall said. "I'll speak to her owner Mike Rowe now and see what he'd like to do, but I'm delighted she kept pulling it out and she loved the fast ground."

Hawkhill landed the opening novices' hurdle, scoring by two lengths from Ugo under 10lb claimer Jason Keily.

Peter and Karen Bowen's Sizing Santiago is starting to look like plenty of value for a £5,500 price tag, having dug deep to win the feature two miles five furlongs handicap chase under Tom O'Brien.

Two fences from home, the winner was upsides Temple Lord, with Rob Conti travelling ominously well between the pair. But Sizing Santiago took it up in the dying strides to win by a neck.

The grand veteran Du Luain Gorm led turning into the home straight in the two miles one furlong novices' handicap hurdle, but 16-1 chance Rime Avec Gentil was hot on his heels, and with Donal Fahey pushing away he ran out a four-lengths winner. It was the winner's first start for his new trainer, Bernard Llewellyn, who had gone ten runs without catching site of the winning post.

First Beauty led turning into the home straight in the handicap hurdle, with 9-4 market leader Changing The Guard working hard to get on terms, and by the final flight the favourite duly took it up to win well enough to give O'Brien a double.

It was the second win in less than two weeks for the progressive six-year-old, who had also scored at Huntingon in August.

Peter Carberry asked Benny's Quest to go on turning into the home straight in the handicap chase but the Colin Tizzard-trained Mibleu, in the hands of Brendan Powell, was pushed on and scored very readily in the end.

The concluding handicap hurdle went the way of the Sophie Leech-trained Is It Me, with Jason Maguire aboard.
