Liz picks up title double at Bowls Devon All Finals Day
MADEIRA's England international Liz Smerdon celebrated a first class double at the Bowls Devon All Finals Day in Plymouth.
After Smerdon had beaten Natalie Melmore (Kings) 21-17 to regain a singles crown that she held 14 years ago, she successfully defended the pairs title with partner Sue Harriott.

Against former champions Margaret Arscott and Nicci Wilkins from North Tawton, Smerdon and Harriott killed off the opposition with a six to lead 17-7 after 10 ends before closing out 25-11 in a superb finish.
Meanwhile, Honiton starlet Hannah Morfey, 16, won the Benevolent Triples with clubmates Joan Heard and Sue Evans. They beat Kay Page (Plymouth Sir Francis Drake) 25-12 in the final to mark the club's first success in this event.
The unbadged singles final saw Janet Sherwood (Morchard Bishop) beat Angie Mayhew (Seaton) 21-9 and the final of the Two-Wood triples saw Chris Slade, Margaret Sampson and Pauline Burton edge out Mary Abbot, Eileen Rich and Joan Martin (Crediton) 17-15.
The over-55 pairs title went to Budleigh Salterton's Maggie Dance and Celia Mangeng, who beat Liz Purdon (Ilfracombe) and Dee Newland (Barnstaple) 26-20 in the final.
Morchard Bishop's Anne Poole, Marcia Mills and Gillian Gunn were beaten 28-3 in the final of the ladies' triples by Ruth Rogers, Sophie Tolchard and Natalie Melmore (Kings).
In the fours, Chris Slade, Gill Callaghan, Margaret Sampson and Christina Woollacott (Tiverton WE) lost 30-16 against Torbay while Kate Andrews and Eileen Bagley from Madeira lost 17-12 to Torbay in the over-70 pairs.
In the final of the Two-Wood singles, England junior Sophie Tolchard beat Terri Kennard (Newton Abbot) 15-10 after 19 ends to concluded a superb run to the final.
And Honiton's Shirley Hiscocks won through to today's officers' finals at Paignton after beating clubmate Rita Barwick, then Maggie Dance, in the Section Three final.
In the men's County Trophy quarter-finals, Exonia went down by a 33-shot margin to great rivals Kings.
Only Tim Heywood won for Exonia at Newton Abbot after linking up with James Hampton, John Young and Colin Mees to beat Phil Hackett 16-14.
Kevin Phillips lost to Craig Down 23-11, Nick Berry lost to Alan Hirst 20-12 and Glenn Allan, holding five shots on each of the last two against, saw rival skip Griff Sanders pick up 10 shots and win 26-11.
Shaldon beat Culm Vale 102-52 at Crediton but Madeira went down to Civil Service 72-92. Bideford completed the semi-final line-up after beating North Down 105-60.
The Exonia club singles final saw David Abrehart-Smith beat John Hooper 21-15.
At the Budleigh Salterton club championships, newly-crowned open champion Alan Cottle beat Gerry Roberts 21-17 in the final after a superb performance from both players.
The ladies' title went to Maggie Dance, who beat pairs partner Mangeng 21-5.
Bob Rivers beat Tony Lim 21-11 to claim the Two-Wood singles, with the ladies' title going to Joan Shaw, who overcame Margaret Ratcliffe 14-11.
The pairs titles were won by Bobby Vanstone and Mangeng and Brian Alabaster and Bob Rivers, respectively.
John Vanstone won the novice and handicap singles while Bobby Vanstone and Rita de Selincourt won the ladies' novice's pairs. The Budleigh Centenary Cup was won by John Dance, Yvonne Smith and Jean Coates.
