London tube worker from Exeter suspended after posting racist Facebook messages

A London tube worker from Exeter has been suspended from work after posting racist messages on his Facebook page.

Martin Aitken, who commutes from Exeter to London, started working for London under ground this year.

When The Evening Standard newspaper approached the tube worker about the comments last week Aitken said the revelation was "going to jeopardise my job".

He told the newspaper that he did not hate Muslims and was not a racist as his "best mate is Jamaican".

Posts included jokes about disabled children and racist poems.

Aitken added he has deleted his Facebook account and apologised for the posts.

He said: "It is stupid. I did not see the offence it could have caused.

"I overlooked the fact I am offending people and I apologise."

A spokesman for Transport for London said:

“Transport for London expects its agency contractors to adhere to the highest possible standards and will not tolerate bigoted and abusive behaviour from anyone working for us.

“As soon as the content of these posts were brought to our attention on Monday, February 18, Mr Aitken was suspended from duty. The agency he was engaged through is undertaking its own investigation.”
