Man admits Exeter groping spree

A MAN has admitted repeatedly groping young women across Exeter in a series of shocking attacks.

Szczepan Majcherczyk, of Powderham Crescent, Exeter, appeared before city magistrates where he pleaded guilty to five charges, including three sexual assaults and two public order offences. He now faces jail.

The attacks took place over a period of four days last month – with two assaults taking place in one day.

The court heard how the 32-year-old targeted mainly young women from the university.

In all of the sexual assaults, Majcherczyk groped his victims after propositioning them.

In the first attack, Majcherczyk followed a woman at Exeter's Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) before touching her inappropriately.

Prosecutor Lyndsey Baker told the court: "These offences took place over a short period of time between February 16 and February 20.

"The defendant has pleaded guilty to three sexual offences and two public order matters – equally sexually motivated.

"The victims were primarily students from the university.

"The first offence took place just before 5pm at the RAMM.

"A woman was walking around the museum. He made a comment to her, saying 'there are lots of sexy girls at the museum, would you like to go out with me tonight'. She said 'no thank you'.

"He followed her closely and placed his hand on her bottom.

"She swiped his hand away. The incident was captured on CCTV."

Ms Baker said that the second attack happened later that day.

"A young woman was approached by the defendant from behind," she said.

"The victim said he slipped his hands in her shorts. She wriggled away from him and started to run off."

The third sexual assault happened three days later on Tuesday, February 19, in Pennsylvania Road, where Majcherczyk approached his victim and asked her if she wanted to have sex with him, before touching her inappropriately.

The court heard how the victim called police and was left "very upset" by the attack.

The two public order offences relate to incidents at the University of Exeter library and the Tesco Metro store in Exeter's High Street, where Majcherczyk propositioned women and made lewd suggestions to them.

Majcherczyk was represented by Warren Robinson in court.

Ms Baker told magistrates their powers of sentencing were insufficient to be able to deal with the matter and that the case must be sent to the city's crown court.

Majcherczyk is facing a sentence of around 12 months' imprisonment.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Exeter Crown Court on Thursday, April 4.
