A COUNCIL worker found  the body of a young man  hanged in a city park.

The discovery was made by  an Exeter City Council community patrol officer in  Rougemont Gardens.

The 21-year-old man was  believed to have been staying  with his sister in the city.

The council worker found  the man as he unlocked the  gates at Rougemont Gardens  at around 8am on Sunday.

The man has not yet been  identified by police although  his family are understood to  have been informed of his  death.

No one else is believed to  have been involved in the  incident and it is not being  treated as suspicious by police.

A spokesman for Devon &  Cornwall police confirmed  the incident.

He said: “Early on Sunday  morning, a man was found  hanged in Rougemont Gardens, in Exeter.

“A council community patrol officer made the discovery at around 8am.

“His body was recovered  and his next of kin have been  informed.

“We can confirm that the  man was a 21-year-old Polish  national, who we believed  was staying locally with his  sister.

“Formal identification is  yet to take place. No one else  was involved in the incident  and police do not believe  there were any suspicious  circumstances surrounding  the death.”

Formal identification of  the 21-year-old man is expected to take place later this  week.

A spokeswoman for the Exeter coroner’s office said:  “We have not dealt with this  case yet. Formal identification is likely to take place  later this week.”

Magda Wood, vice-chairman of the Exeter Polish Association who also works in  mental heath, said Polish nationals who came to Exeter  often struggled to find work  and settle in the city.

“This sounds very sad,”  she said. “I have seen Polish  people living over here who  are under a lot of stress.

“They often find themselves in desperate situations, where they have no  money and nowhere to go.

“Sometimes they can’t go  back to Poland as they have  no one to go back to.

“There could be many reasons why this has happened  to this young man.”

A spokesman for Exeter  City Council said: “We can  confirm that one of the council’s community patrollers  found the body of a man on  Sunday morning.”

“A sad story. Although there is one good thing to come out of this tragic tale. It was rather fortunate that it was a council worker and not a child that made the discovery.”
