IT will be a 40th birthday celebration with a difference when John Doran travels to Ireland to try and complete a marathon.

John, who lives in Exmouth and is the director of Peninsula Asset Finance, has signed up to take part in the 33rd Dublin Marathon, which is run through the historic Georgian streets of Ireland's capital city.

The run takes place on Monday, October 29, a bank holiday in Ireland, and John will be one of over 5,000 overseas runners expected to take part.

He said: "I know that Macmillan Cancer Support is such a good cause. And both through the business and as a family we already do everything we can to help, so when the chance came to take part in the Dublin Marathon and be able to increase the support we are able to give them, I jumped at the opportunity."

Macmillan Cancer Support was set up by Douglas Macmillan 100 years ago, to improve the lives of everyone affected by cancer.

They support patients, their carers and their families with practical, medical, emotional and financial help.

In Devon, 2,400 people are diagnosed each year with cancer at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital alone, and they all need treatment and support.

John added: "This will be my first marathon at the ripe old age of 40, so it is certainly something different to look forward to, but with so many people needing help and assistance from Macmillan I'm so pleased to be able to make my small contribution."
