Nature lovers invited to site
WILDLIFE lovers are invited to a series of fact-finding events at a newly-acquired nature reserve in Devon.
Labrador Bay, near Shaldon, is run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and is the charity's latest acquisition.
It was purchased from Teignbridge District Council following a public appeal and with help from Devon County Council to save the rare cirl bunting.
The bird's population is almost entirely restricted to South Devon
Volunteers and staff will show people around the site and talk about protection measures on Saturday.
Similar events will be held on Thursday, June 18, and the Saturday , June 20 — all from 10am to 4pm.
There will also be an informal evening on Monday at the Thatched Tavern at Maidencombe, where people can meet RSPB representatives and learn more about its plans for the site.
RSPB area manager Giles Beauchamp said: "Everyone is excited about Labrador Bay and its potential for cirl buntings.
"Since taking over management of the site, we have cleared scrub, introduced animal grazing and sown crops that will provide food for the birds in winter.
"All of this will directly benefit the species, five breeding pairs of which are already resident on site.
"The reserve is also great for many other creatures such as bats, butterflies, grasshoppers and crickets and for flowers."
