New Exeter supermarket work on schedule

SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons has said work on its first store in the city is progressing on schedule.

The company is converting the former Co-op supermarket in Prince Charles Road, Beacon Heath, in preparation for opening this summer.

New recruits and employees of the old store who have transferred to Morrisons are undergoing training at the retailer’s store in Paignton.

The company revealed that it had nearly 700 applicants for the 150 new jobs created at the Exeter store and petrol station.

Gail Roberts, retail recruitment manager at Morrisons, said: “We had an amazing response to the recruitment drive and are optimistic that we will build up a team that can deliver great service to the people of Exeter.”

Morrisons is due to announce the opening date for the Exeter supermarket at the end of this month.

As well as stocking  goods from groceries to home and leisure items, it will feature what Morrisons calls Market Street — a collection of traditional, specialist fresh food counters which include a butcher, baker and fishmonger.

A spokeswoman for the company said: “Morrisons has more people preparing more food in store than any other retailer and more qualified staff in each area. The bakers are trained so they can bake different types of bread; butchers qualified in traditional craft skills to offer the freshest meat and prepare over 110 products; and fishmongers equipped with the skills to prepare over 110 different cuts of fish and to give advice on preparation.”

Stuart Kinghorn, store manager at Morrisons Exeter, said: “We are really proud that we can bring Morrisons to Exeter.”

As the Echo reported in April, hundreds of job hunters attended a recruitment day at Exeter Racecourse.

Competition rules meant Co-op had to sell off some of its stores for its takeover of Somerfield to be approved.

As well as acquiring the store in Beacon Heath, Morrisons, the UK’s fourth largest supermarket chain, has bought the former Somerfield branch in Crediton.
