New memorial for war victims
A NEW war memorial commemorating Exeter servicemen who have died in active service since the Second World War has been put up in Northernhay Gardens.
The polished granite tablet was commissioned by the city council after a suggestion from Exeter war widow Kirianne Curley.
Kirianne's husband Stephen was killed in May 2010 while on foot patrol in Afghanistan.
Kirianne told the Echo: "Following my husband's death in Afghanistan I was disappointed to discover that there was no local memorial to those who have lost their lives in military conflicts since the Second World War.

"I approached John Street, Exeter's corporate manager for civic support, about this and was delighted when he responded with a pledge to ensure that a fitting tribute would be commissioned as soon as possible.
"I was fortunate enough to be invited, with my family, to discuss the nature of the memorial and I think the council have devised a fitting tribute; a place of quiet and reflection to which bereaved families and friends can go and remember loved ones."
She added: "I am sure that all the families involved would like to join me in expressing our gratitude to John Street and his team for the work that has gone into creating this garden of remembrance."
The memorial's official unveiling will be undertaken by the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Councillor Rob Newby, and the first Commander Joint Forces Command, Air Chief Marshall Sir Stuart Peach KCB, CBE, FRAeS, on Monday, September 10, at 10.30am
The memorial includes the inscription of the Remembrance Exhortation and a tablet with the names of the 10 Exeter servicemen who have lost their lives in conflicts overseas, including those in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan.
The memorial is situated in the redesigned garden area just inside the Queen Street entrance to Northernhay Gardens.
As well as the Lord Mayor and the first Commander Joint Forces Command, other local civic and military dignitaries will be in attendance.
These include the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Devon, the Bishop of Exeter, the Vice Chancellor of Exeter University and representatives from the battalions and regiments in which the fallen servicemen had served.
Cllr Newby said: "As a city, we already honour our dead from the two Great Wars, and it is fitting that we honour those who have fallen since 1945. This memorial allows us to do just that."
