The president of the Royal College of Surgeons Professor Norman Williams has officially opened the Exeter Surgical Health Services Research Unit (HeSRU) at the Royal Devon & Exeter Wonford hospital.

The specialist resource brings together a wealth of clinical knowledge and research to improve the care and experience of surgical patients. The unit facility has a video link from a seminar room to operating theatres for teaching and a clinical consultation room. It supports work for the National Institute for Health research and strengthens established links with partners, including the University of Exeter and Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry.

Consultant colorectal surgeon Professor Williams was hosted by RD&E consultant surgeons and during his visit he heard first hand about the latest surgical research being performed in the unit including work on the early detection of surgical complications, novel developments in surgical training as well as improvements in the treatment of skin cancer.

Professor Williams said: "This is a tremendous initiative as research, development and innovation are at the heart of thinking for the future. The Royal College of Surgeons is delighted to see this development here at the RD&E and it reflects our ambition to ensure that surgical research is shared nationwide."

RD&E consultant lead Mr John McGrath said: "We are delighted that Professor Williams made time to come to visit our hospital and dedicated surgical research facility. This was an opportunity to showcase excellence and innovation in surgery at the RD&E and how the NHS works collaboratively with academic and science research partners with the shared aim of improving our health services for patients. This unit will also be instrumental in the professional and personal development and training of surgeons so they continue to learn and refine their skills and knowledge."

RD&E consultant colorectal surgeon Miss Patricia Boorman said: "It was an honour to have hosted Professor Williams and other members of council of the Royal College of Surgeons. Research and development in surgery is a very important strategy to the RD&E in ensuring best practices and the very best possible care for surgical patients. The opening of the new research unit will provide a lasting memorial of this successful day."
