Luke's mother, Denise Lyons, said: "It was a very emotional night for us. One hundred and seven cars left Tiverton and more joined in Cullompton and Exeter. These were not just acquaintances but real friends and it meant a huge amount.

"It was an amazing night."

The convoy drove from McDonald's in Tiverton, one of Luke's favourite eateries, to Exmouth, an area which he and his friends enjoyed visiting.

The event went ahead despite six of the vehicles taking part being involved in a shunt.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the A361, eastbound, between Tiverton and the M5, at around 7.50pm on Saturday. A number of people were treated for minor injuries to necks and backs and cars were damaged.

A police spokesman said: "We were called to a multi-vehicle incident. Fortunately there were no serious injuries and those who were hurt were treated at the scene."

Participants said the event had been a success despite the accident.

It was organised by groups of Luke's friends and attracted youngsters from Tiverton and further afield.

Many vehicles bore customised messages paying tribute to the popular youngster.

Floral tributes and messages have also been left at the accident scene on the A396, just south of Cove near to Bickleigh Wood.

Luke also left behind a sister, Danielle, and father Mark, as well as a large extended family, many of whom have visited the scene of the accident and collected cards and items left by friends, which they said had provided a source of comfort.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the incident in which Luke was killed to contact them on 101 quoting log number 515 25/01/13. Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who drove along the A396 early on the morning of Friday, January 25 to help confirm what driving conditions would have been like at the time Luke left his home in Bampton to drive to work in North Devon.

Luke had been due to celebrate his 20th birthday on Friday.

The teenager's friends have used social networking site Facebook to express their feelings of loss.

A page called 'R.I.P. Luke Lyons' was set up on the website and has attracted 265 members. Around 40 birthday messages for Luke were left on the page during the course of Friday. Pictures of the convoy trip and the release of Chinese lanterns have also circulated online.

Luke's funeral will be held on Monday from midday at St Michael and All Angel's Church, Bampton.
