BRISTOL Rovers' chances of avoiding the drop from League Two were given a boost this week with the news that the loan deal of Colchester midfielder John-Joe O'Toole has been extended by a further two months.

O'Toole, 24, was brought to the Memorial Stadium on New Year's Eve by former U's boss John Ward, who took over at Rovers on December 17.

The midfielder has been a key player for Rovers during January and scored in their 3-0 win over Fleetwood Town.

Colchester do have the option to recall O'Toole to their team with 24-hours' notice, but Ward is hopeful the Irish midfielder will be with them for the majority of games they have left.

"If everything goes well we have him for the next 15 games and he will only miss the last four," said Ward.

"He brings a strength and a character to the club and he wears his heart on his sleeve. He is a ball winner and always gives everything.

"He is what we need at this club, he cares about the team and that is why he has endeared himself to the fans."

Wycombe Wanderers have extended their loan agreement with Queens Park Rangers for defender Michael Harriman, who will now stay until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old, who made his debut for Wycombe against Exeter City on New Year's Day, has started their last three games.

"I'm very happy to be staying for the extra few months," said Harriman. "I'm playing regularly and really enjoying it. Playing for Gareth Ainsworth is great and the lads have been really welcoming."

Cheltenham Town have also strengthened their squad by signing Swindon Town striker Paul Benson on loan for the rest of the season. The move came about after Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio had made it clear Benson was no longer in his plans.
