The rain, which fell on thousands of competitors taking on the first adventure race of its kind, only made the event “harder and better”, organisers say.

Around 2,500 thrill seekers completed the RockSolidRace at Escot Park near Honiton on Saturday, March 16.

The event had two formats – a 5-kilometre or 10-kilometre obstacle course. Against the clock, competitors ran, jumped, crawled and climbed their way from start to finish.

The 5km Dash race took in 20 obstacles including 6ft walls, giant hay stacks, swamps, tunnels, ponds and pontoons designed to push short-distance runners to the max.

And the 10km event included 30 obstacles, plus additional obstacles including a log carry, monkey bars, water cannon and 8ft walls, as well as a few surprises.

The event organiser, city optician Ashley Jardine, put the popularity of the event down to obstacles such as an ice vat, a 15m hydro slide into a lake, a 4m vertical cargo net climb and barbed wire crawl.

“Everyone loved the event, loved the course, which the rain made better, because it was muddier and harder,” said the 30-year-old.

“We had a few teething problems,” said Ashley who explained that several volunteers didn’t show up meaning he had to get his family and friends to take their place marshalling the course. “But it was success all round. We’ll be back next year, bigger, better and harder.”

Around 1,500 spectators also enjoyed the day and made use of the Events Village which screened the Six Nations Rugby and hosted musicians including The Voice star Adam Isaac.
