Police are urging drivers to take great care if they have to travel, despite flood waters now falling on many of the region's main roads.

By 4pm the predicted further heavy showers had failed to materialise in Exeter and many routes previously impassable for drivers became clear again.

But Devon and Cornwall police still warned against non essential travel as darkness fell.

A spokesman said: "The road network remains hazardous due to many patches of standing water - avoid non essential travel in hours of darkness."
