A BATTLE to stop a city post office being closed has united political opponents in Exeter.

All four group leaders at the city council have given their backing to a campaign to stop the Queen Street post office from being shut.

Post Office Ltd is closing branches nationwide as part of a cost-saving plan. The firm announced this week that the Queen Street branch, initially earmarked for closure, would be subject to another review, with the outcome likely to be announced in three weeks.

Last month, the city council wrote to Post Office Ltd calling for the four city post offices, including the Queen Street branch, to be saved.

This week, Post Office Ltd confirmed the closure of three of the four Exeter post offices: Exwick Road, Pinhoe Road and Union Road.

Council leader Adrian Fullam said: “All four political parties on the city council are against the closure of the Queen Street branch. A motion put forward to the council's executive to save the other three Exeter post offices received unanimous cross-party backing but unfortunately this didn't change the minds of the decision makers at Post Office Ltd.”
