NEGATIVE images of young people in the media are being tackled by a Devon council.

East Devon District Council has appointed its first youth press officer to help promote the positive and interesting things young people do.

Laura Gould, 16, from Colyton, attends Axe Valley Community College, where she is currently studying for her A-levels in photography, English, law and textiles.

She is a keen writer, with an interest in journalism and ambitions of a career in media and public relations.

"This meant she was an ideal candidate for the new role," said a district council spokesman.

Laura said: "It is a delight to be one of the new youth press officers and I certainly will make the most of the brilliant opportunities that come with it.

"I also want to elevate the status of young people within the community so they feel that their views can be heard and are of importance."

Laura will be scouting out young people's events and interests, as well as seeking their views on issues, before writing articles on them.

Her press releases will then be sent out to the media in the East Devon area.
