There are some foods that are off-limits when expecting a baby, and sushi is one of those I thought I couldn’t have.

But it turns out, there is much more to the Japanese cuisine than just raw fish.

A lunchtime trip to the newly-opened YO! Sushi in Exeter’s Princesshay, was a welcome experience.

I took my partner and young daughter, who got to sit in a snazzy orange high-chair complete with a colouring pencil set, paper and her own children’s menu.

Sitting in a comfy window-booth, we could watch the world go by, along with the sushi belt, which goes right past the window – a first for the restaurant chain. Passers-by seemed in awe of this new type of dining which has arrived in Exeter, staring through at the coloured dishes going past!

I choose a hot dish of the new Ramen menu, the Five Spice Gyu Ramen, a tasty beef dish marinated in ginger and spices and then roasted. My partner ordered the Chicken Teriyaki and for our daughter we chose the Vegetable Futomaki sushi rolls, which she enjoyed and even managed to master the children’s chopsticks!

We also ordered a number of side dishes, such as the Chicken Firecracker Rice, which was delicious and for desert we shared a plate of fresh fruit and tried out the Dorayaki which are Japanese pancakes with custard filling and raspberry sauce.

It is so tempting to keep eating, as every dish that goes past looks so colourful and tasty, but we stopped there, feeling we could not fit another morsel in!

The restaurant is sophisticated and colourful – with comfortable pink and blue leather seating.

The main attraction, apart from the food, is the feature wall which is covered with a delicate Japanese blossom design.

By the time we left our comfy booth, the restaurant was very busy, with people queuing at the door. It is a great place to go if you want a quick snack or a more fulfilling meal.

Dishes are priced according to the colour of the plate and range from £1.80 to £5.00. There are also larger hot dishes available and a wide selection of soft and alcoholic drinks.

YO! Sushi Exeter opens from 11.30am to 11pm Monday to Saturday, and 11.30am to 10pm on Sunday. Find the restaurant at 8 Bedford Street, Princesshay, Exeter, EX1 1LL. Telephone 01392 331340.
