NEARLY one in three workers in Exeter are employed part-time, official figures have revealed.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), 17,300 people in the city – just under 30 per cent of all employees – are in part-time work.

The rate of part-time working is even higher in East Devon – at 37.3 per cent, or 19,900 people. In Mid Devon, just over a quarter of workers – or 8,400 people – are in part-time jobs, while in Teignbridge the figure is 28 per cent, or 15,600.

The figures come amid concerns over the rising number of people classed as underemployed.

While many people work part-time through choice, a growing number are having to do so because they cannot find a full-time job. The ONS said the number of underemployed workers – those who want to work more hours – has risen by an estimated one million, or 47.3 per cent – since the start of the economic downturn in 2008 to stand at 3.05 million in 2012. At 10.4 per cent, the underemployment rate in the South West is above the UK average.
