Respect Festival looks to stamp out racism
A diverse line-up of music from across the world will entertain crowds at a free festival which aims to stamp out racism.
Last year, more than 20,000 people attended Exeter's Respect Festival, described as "Glastonbury on a pinhead".
The festival is one of a number of spin-off of events born out of the murder of Stephen Lawrence, the black teenager who was killed in a racist attack in London in 1993. The festivals, which now take place across Europe, aim to promote understanding by creating an event where different cultures can have fun together.
Exeter organiser Paul Giblin said the festival, in Belmont Park today and tomorrow, would provide a great family day out. "The feedback we get tells us that the Respect Festival is an effective way to tackle prejudices. Because it's free, it attracts some people who can be harder to reach."

The event, which runs until 7pm today and 6pm tomorrow, includes a children's activity area, and a bar purposefully tucked away in a "discreet corner" to create a family-friendly atmosphere.
The programme includes performances from ska and raggae stars Laid Blak and Exeter hip hop and indie band N.U.M.B.
Radio 1 DJ Nihal will also be among a number of acts to play at evening events around the city, but primarily at the Phoenix Centre.

“I have lived and worked in London and south coast for many years before returning to south west...was commenting on the fact that a city like Exeter can do such a huge event given the majority population when many other more diverse cities don't bother.
