Marcus Brigstocke is a very funny man and a gifted and experienced comedian. However, even he would probably agree that his performance at the Corn Exchange did not get off to the smoothest start.
The show was briefly sidetracked for several minutes in the early stages when a woman in the audience loudly heckled Marcus over a political comment the comedian had made. To his credit, Marcus attempted to discuss the issue before the woman, who was in an emotionally charged state, stormed out.
Thankfully, the show quickly recovered. As fans of Marcus's TV and radio work will know, he is often a very political comedian, unafraid of tackling a broad range of contentious issues such as David Cameron's "Big Society", the teaching of religion in schools, the banking crisis, religion, racism, the rise of UKIP and the credit crunch.
But this was not a lecture. Marcus also had the audience in stitches with his memories of his own time at public school as well as, more locally (he used to live in Devon), anecdotes about "Goth Night" at Timepiece in Exeter and of his experiences working on Tiverton Market.
Marcus was also consistently on form with material on the Olympic Games and the irritations of using public transport. Even when being more political, Marcus often got the audience actively involved. Overall, this was an excellent night despite the wobbly start and with nearly a full two hours on stage from Marcus, excellent value.
