IF you haven’t been to the Phoenix before to see one of their Christmas shows, then you have missed a real treat.

The Exeter arts centre has been working with Quirk Theatre for the last 10 years to present a festive family offering and they are always excellent.

    The Emperor's Perfume

Following the rip-roaring success of last year’s The Princess and The Goblin, this year they are performing The Emperor’s Perfume.

Quirk productions are renowned for their ingenious theatrical devices, freshness of interpretation, and simple but stunning costume and set design and this show did not disappoint.

Performed by a cast of three – Simon Hall, Emma Vickery and Rose Robinson – it tells the story of the Emperor of the town of Sniffniff who is always bored and expects his two aids to keep him entertained.

On hearing that the town’s famous Parfumier creates the best scent in the land. He demands that he create a new perfume, a perfume never smelt before, a perfume fit for a king, or else there will be trouble.

Together they set off on a dangerous journey to the pyramids to find the famous scent and on the way the Emperor finally learns some manners.

This is a great production which had the young audience captivated from start to finish. The three actors are excellent playing a variety of roles and the whole performance is innovative, imaginative and incredibly inventive.

It plays until the end of the week and before each performance there is a chance to join a whiffy workshop with a team from Lush cosmetics. Youngsters get a chance to design and make their own bath bomb.

The next performance are: Friday, January 4 at 4.30pm, with a Whiffy Workshop at 3.15pm and Saturday, January 5, shows at 2pm and 4.30pm, Whiffy Workshop: 3.15pm.
