Review: Hairy Bikers at the Princess Theatre, Torquay... like you've never seen them before
YOU have to hand it to best mates and Hairy Bikers Si King and Dave Myers.First they won the nation over with their down-to-earth cooking and cheeky Northern banter, then they helped the nation collectively slim down with their best-selling Hairy Dieters show, losing a whopping three stone each and winning still more fans in the process.Now, still noticeably slimmer yet as larger than life as ever, they're cooking up a storm with their UK tour.And as I discovered when I caught the show as it stopped off at Torquay's Princess Theatre, not only is there cooking on the menu but a chance to see a whole lot more of Dave and Si than you might imagine – or have bargained for.There was a daring death-defying stunt performed live on stage, a hint of dubious glamour as Strictly Come Dancing made a (mercifully) brief appearance, and Wheel of Fortune like you've never seen it played before – all brought to the stage with the boys' trademark warmth, humour and boundless energy.We were taken around the world with video clips of some of the more unusual moments from their cookery shows – think cross-dressing, I'm a Celebrity-style cuisine and unusual knitted hot tub attire (use your imagination).
And then, of course, there was the food.Two pairs of lucky audience members were each treated to a two-course meal, cooked live on stage, while the rest of us looked on with mounting envy as the mouth-watering aromas of duck, spices and salmon filled the theatre. I for one will be digging out their diet book to knock out their chicken jalfrezi in the very near future.What makes the Hairy Bikers so enduringly popular is their genuine friendship – there's no forced joviality here, just the easy joshing and jibes of an affectionate long-time acquaintance.Si and Dave really know how to tickle each other's funny bone, and in turn those of the audience, which made for an extremely entertaining evening.The Hairy Bikers Larger Than Live tour stopped at the Princess Theatre for one night only, but is playing across the UK until the beginning of April.By Bridget Batchelor
