Rocket rocked as youngster comes up Trumps
ROCKET Ronnie O'Sullivan failed to light up bonfire night in Exeter as young pretender Judd Trump stole the show during Premier League Snooker’s first outing to the city.
Trump outplayed the three-time World Champion with a display of raw talent in front of a crowd of 600 people – and the Sky Sports cameras - at the Riverside Leisure Centre in St Thomas.
The 20-year-old Bristolian took the six-frame match 4-2 as O’Sullivan struggled to find his game all evening.
The result moved Trump up to second in the table, just one place behind the Rocket who is aiming for his sixth straight Premier League title this year.
And it also proved a successful night for recent Grand Prix ace Neil Robertson who edged past the tournament’s 2003 champion Marco Fu after a slow first match of the evening.
The Australian produced a succession of outrageous doubles to finish a 4-2 winner over Fu, who has struggled with his form throughout this season’s competition.
But all the talk afterwards was of Trump’s performance as he attacked the Essex-man from first frame to last.
Taking his cue following an early loose shot from O’Sullivan, Trump – nicknamed Haircut 100 after his flamboyant bouffant – hit a sharp break of 67 to take the first frame.
O’Sullivan began to show what he was made of in the second frame, knocking together breaks of 49 and 44 to equalise.
But from then on in, the youngster – often compared to last night’s opponent for his precocious talent – had the crowd wowed with his display.
Scoring a 79 highest break of the evening in the third frame, he gave the Rocket no chance, while a controlled 51 in the fourth followed by a 40 clearance after another uncharacteristic miss from O’Sullivan saw Trump take a 3-1 lead.
And after a close fifth frame, he stretched his advantage to an unbeatable 4-1 with another clean up full of finesse and accuracy.
O’Sullivan took the final frame – with the crowd still appreciating the efforts of the man they had come to see - but his first defeat of the Premier League season had already been guaranteed by Trump, whose first visit to Exeter had clearly been a happy one.
Things weren’t so certain in the first match of the evening, as Robertson and Fu each endured a sloppy – and time consuming - start to their encounter.
After some bitty snooker from both, with Fu’s 22 the highest break by a distance, the man from Hong Kong was happy to benefit from a lucky red and a calm clearance to win the first frame of the session.
And things continued in the same vein in the second frame before Fu potted the white on a difficult red and Robertson was able to clear up with breaks of 42 and 23.
The Thunder from Down Under took the third after another scrappy frame, dominated by safety shots and snookers, but Fu kept things interesting by levelling in the fourth frame.
As both players began to find their rhythm a little more, the fifth frame went to the wire – each totalling 63 points – and Robertson banging in a superb double into the far corner on a respotted black.
The Aussie wasn’t about to let things slip from there – with championship points and £1,000 prize money per frame at stake – slamming in another double on the black to finish things at 4-2.
With just two rounds to go before the semi-final places are settled, Trump and Robertson will be more than happy with their night’s work in the Westcountry.

“A fantastic night of entertainment.
Some great photos on the slideshow that capture the whole evening with the enjoyment of the crowd. The tension of the Neil Robertson, Marco Fu match. The two sides of Ronnie O'Sullivan showing his serious approach and his enjoyment of the game and finally the serious approach to the business of Judd Trump. Well done to the photographer.”
