Rogers asks team to share the goals
TIVERTON Town manager Martyn Rogers has ordered his side to start sharing the goals around if they are to avoid relegation.
The Yellows boss says there has become too much of a reliance on striker Joe Bushin, who has hit 13 goals since his arrival from Dawlish Town in November.
The frontman's 10th league goal of the season could not prevent Tiverton from crashing to a 2-1 defeat at Stourbridge on Tuesday night — a result that leaves Tivvy just two points above the drop zone.
And Rogers has urged his other players to start chipping in ahead of tomorrow's home game with Cambridge City.
"You have only got to look at our goals record this season — we don't score many and we don't let that many in," said Rogers.
"That has been a trait all season and that is why we are where we are in the league.
"Joe Bushin got another goal on Tuesday night, but we need players to take responsibility and start helping out.
"We can't rely on Joe all the time. To be fair to him he has done brilliantly with the goals he has scored and to get 10 league goals is no mean feat.
"He had a bit of a back injury last Saturday and he wasn't 100 per cent from the start. But the lad wants to play and he scored again on Tuesday.
"It might have been a tap-in but he is there in that position and he works very hard.
"But we need to take the pressure off him and start sharing the goals around."
Back-to-back defeats at the hands of Merthyr Tydfil and Stourbridge has dragged the Yellows back in trouble.
Rogers hopes the fact Cambridge need to win to keep their play-hopes alive will force them to come out and attack on Saturday.
The Tivvy boss believes his side fares better against teams who have a go instead of those who get men behind the ball. "We had a good game at their place where we drew and I think we have become a better side since then," said Rogers.
"They are a good footballing team and I am sure they will come at us because of where they are in the league.
"I think we do better when we are playing teams near the top of the table. It suits us better when teams come on to us because it gives us more space going forward.
"When teams shut up shop we find them more difficult to break down.
"It is difficult to say how many points will be needed to ensure safety. A couple of wins and all of a sudden you are looking as though you are fairly safe. I hope it doesn't go to the wire. I think we are capable of pulling off some good results between now and the end of the season.
"The results on Tuesday tended to go for us, apart from Clevedon winning at Merthyr. But we have got to help ourselves. We've got a run of home games this month and we need to win some of those and come out with a good points haul."
Rogers is likely to bring Adam Faux back into the side after the full-back completed a three-match suspension.
"It is a boost to have Adam back available," said Rogers.
Mark Saunders is unlikely to shake off an ankle injury in time to play, while Colin Marshall and Tom Gardner came through Tuesday's game unscathed.
