Cane denied the murder of his mother Linda Sheard, aged 63, who was found dead at the home they shared in Port Mer Close, Brixington, Exmouth, on Wednesday July 11.

Judge Gilbert adjourned the case for a further hearing on January 4 when the case will be listed for mention.

The court was told that Cane will offer a plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter on that date but this is not acceptable to the prosecution and a trial date has been set for July next year.

Cane was arrested in Gloucester three days after the alleged murder after police and his father Michael Cane appealed for him to give himself up. His mother’s car had earlier been found in Bristol.

Cane worked for the Exmouth based building contractors DJH Roofers, where his mother also worked as a secretary.
