The fire started at 5.30am on the A38 Haldon Hill northbound in Chudleigh just after Harcombe Cross. Restrictions weren’t lifted until around 9.15am.

Large white scorch marks caused by the blaze were visible on the road after restrictions were lifted.

One motorist said: “It took me an hour to get to Exeter from Bovey Tracey, a journey that usually takes 20 minutes. It was very frustrating and a lot of people will have been late for work this morning. But there is nothing you can do apart from sit and wait for it to clear.

“As soon as the cones were removed from the road the traffic started flowing again very quickly.”

“Was there really any need to restrict the road for this amount of time?”
