Schoolboy football tale prompts photo memory
NOSTALGIC stories on the footballing prowess of boys from the old Ladysmith school and stalwarts such as Cliff Bastin and Jack Radford, sent Echo reader Horace Hawkey on a sentimental journey back in time.
And back to his photo album, for he has very kindly sent me some excellent pictures taken of players with Heavitree United, a team that many a Ladysmith player progressed to.

Mr Hawkey, who now lives in Silverton, was in the Ladysmith School team in the 1950s. After leaving school he played for the Heavies, as had his father.
He said: "I knew Jack Radford from the Heavitree team and his son, Mike, through Exeter City. In May 1962 I went to Rennes in Brittany, Exeter's twin town, for an inter city games festival of sport. Jack was the manager of the team. I remember we won the match 3 - 0 — and a smashing time was had by all."
