South West homeless programme gets £160,000
More than £160,000 of funding has been allocated to help house homeless people in the South West.
The new funding will enable the expansion of a programme which has helped more than 300 single homeless people in the South West into private rented accommodation since 2010. The schemes recruit and support landlords and offer assistance and advice to tenants on finding suitable accommodation, paying a deposit and rent in advance and help with budgeting and paying bills amongst other services.

By the end of 2012 a total of 3,917 tenancies had been created by its 120 schemes.
Leslie Morphy, chief executive of Crisis, said: "Challenging conditions in the private rented sector make this work difficult but all the more important as people struggle to make ends meet."

“- in some countries the Church and organisations like Vincent de paul - buy or own property - and then allow people to live in them as tenants - the old model of "community" used to surround the monastery or church group - but Lay people / groups / councils could do the same thing with a number of properties - with the aim of getting people to a normal a life as possible with the same lifestyle quality and access as other people....”

“Excellent work ! Direct action is the best - taking direct steps literally achieves right from the beginning...Some ideas - having a homeless count to find out how many there are - then - find out how many want a place - then - find properties / rooms and willing landlords - Then the only issue is money - access to jobs / retraining - keeping people "included" in society - networking people with friends and relatives / church and social groups / establishing neighbourhood and community centres....all helps. I think in rural counties - getting sustainable Rural properties to function self sufficient would be Excellent - along the line of intentional communities / communal living - could be encouraged / supported and funded - with Education in sustainable living - building / farming / solar and wind technology....It all starts by forming Groups / organisations that Plan and then Implement the necessary steps....”

“Pfft! A drop in the ocean.
I suppose any amount is more than welcome, but if £160,000 is to be shared amongst 120 schemes, this means they will each be realistically able to support four people's private deposits.
Why do we need 120 schemes anyway? Seems a ridiculous number to me.”
