Stag is part of Devon history
YOUR story of the Stag Inn, Rackenford, being up for sale brings back many memories for me. There must be a great number of stories surrounding the Stag that have put this wonderful 12th century pub into the folklore of Devon.
One such story was that in the days of the highwaymen, the daring Tom King used to hide in the Stag when he was being chased by the king's men.
Right or wrong, it certainly made for an exciting yarn, especially when there were those who claimed they had seen his ghost roaming around the inn!
There are many other stories that have emanated from the pub over the years, some fit to be recounted and others best left in the mist of time.
But the Stag is a great landmark in Rackenford and, indeed, throughout the whole of Devon. I can only hope that this fine example of a Grade II listed building soon finds new owners.
The asking price is £595,000 and any prospective buyer will not only have gained an inn but also a piece of Devon history. And that can't be bad, can it?
