An aluminium whale on wheels is heading to Exeter this weekend and the public are invited to enter its mouth for a truly unique experience.

The 3.5 metre high structure, described as a "Theatre of place" by its creators, will be in Princesshay on July 7th as part of the Exeter Ignite festival.

Once inside the whale the audience are treated to a witty and charming 3 minute theatre show preformed by a solo actor.

The free show is recommended for one adventurer at a time (but can be viewed in small groups) and is based on a lovesick submarine who gives an original performance to each who enter the whales jaws. The tale is told by Jonah who desperately needs help communicating a message of great importance to his loved one on shore.

The group behind The Whale, Talking Birds, said: "Our performers put audience members – who are sometimes a little nervous to begin with - entirely at their ease. Surprise, delight and disbelief are the common characteristics of people on their way out!"

Talking Birds has been producing thoughtful, playful, mischievous and transformative meditations on people and place since 1992 and, much like past Exeter events such as RedBall Uk and Sacrilege, The Whale is designed to play on an element of surprise. To date the aluminium structure has had over 6,000 people pass through it and has visited sites across the United Kingdom.

The Whale will be in Princesshay from 10:30am to 4:30pm on Saturday performing roughly 400 individual shows throughout the day. A sou'westered fisherman will also be in the shopping centre managing the queue and building the sense of anticipation.  Suitable for ages 6+ and fully accessible for wheelchair users.
