Supermarket go-ahead looks likely for Queen's Head in Pinhoe Road

A POPULAR city pub looks set to make way for a supermarket, despite widespread protests from regulars.

Hundreds of people have signed a petition against the plans for the Queen's Head in Pinhoe Road to become a Farmfoods store.

The proposals are to be discussed by the city council's planning committee next week.

In a report drawn up by planning officers, the scheme is recommended for approval.

There have been a total of 28 objections, as well as petition calling for the pub to remain, which has been signed by 675 people.

The pub has already been sold by Spirit Inns to the retailer.

But the current temporary licensees are keen to take it over, and told the Echo they would retain it as a pub.

They said they were keen to purchase the freehold and use the bedrooms to run it as a bed and breakfast and improve the food offered by the outlet.

The pub, which dates from the 1930s, is not listed.

The siting of any new building is fixed to a significant degree because of a restrictive covenant which covers much of the site and precludes the sale of certain items which are staples for the Farmfoods operation.

Farmfoods has told the city council's planning officer it has looked for a site in the city for a number of years but without success.

Worries expressed by some about increased traffic have been discounted and highways officers have not objected to the scheme going ahead.

Exeter City Council's planning committee will discuss the application at its meeting on February 18.
