TIVERTON chairman of rugby Charlie Burt says he is pleased with how the season has gone so far.

The club currently find themselves fourth in the Cornwall & Devon League and Burt says that has exceeded expectations considering the amount of injuries they have had to deal with.

Tiverton's game against Crediton was postponed on Saturday due to the weather, but reflecting on how his club has done in the opening few months of the season, Burt said: "We are fourth in the league and that is a position we would have been happy with if you had asked us before the season started.

"I'm pleased with the way things have gone so far, because not only have some of the second team players stepped up to play first team rugby this year but we have maintained our form and our effort even with quite a few injuries.

"We have had a lot of injuries and we have still got them now, but people are filling in and playing above their place."

Burt puts Tiverton's good start to the season down to the work of head coach Dave Maddick, who joined the club over the summer following their relegation from Western Counties West.

"There is no doubt that the enthusiasm from the coach has rubbed off on the players, including some of the seniors as well as the youngsters that are in the squad," he said.

Burt added that Tivvy should be back to full strength by Christmas when he hopes they will be able to start putting some pressure on the top three teams in the division.
