Update: Former Tiverton mayor Cllr Kevin Wilson charged with making false claims to receive benefits

-Council officers claim Cllr Wilson produced false documents to obtain benefits such as council tax relief and that he failed to declare income from Liberal Democrat party

The case against a district and town councillor who is charged with producing false documents to help him obtain benefits, including reductions in his council tax payments, has been adjourned for a week.

Kevin Wilson, a former mayor of Tiverton who currently serves on both Mid Devon District Council and Tiverton Town Council, faces two charges following an investigation by Mid Devon District Council.

The first alleges that on March 19, last year, he furnished a document which was false with a view to obtaining benefit or other payment under social security legislation by producing a review form stating the information was correct and complete but he failed to declare that he was in receipt of income from a Scottish Life Income Release policy and income from the Liberal Democrat party.

The second states that on November 24, 2010, he dishonestly furnished a document which was false with a view to obtaining benefit when he submitted a housing benefit and council tax claim form stating the information was correct when he had failed to declare a Scottish Life Income Release policy when required to do so under the Social Security Administration Act.

Wilson, of Besley Close, Tiverton, was mayor of Tiverton in 2007/08.
