Tommy Doherty: Exeter City can bounce back up

TOMMY Doherty has set his sights on getting promoted with Exeter City after signing a new deal to keep him at the club until the end of the season.

The former Bristol City player joined the Grecians in the summer on a six-month contract but, having impressed manager Paul Tisdale, he was offered an extension.

Doherty, who has started 11 games for City this season, was pleased to put pen to paper, and admitted he was enjoying his time at the club.

And he thinks the team spirit which convinced him his future belonged at the Park could prove key to the Grecians' prospects this season.

"It is a good place to be at," said the 33-year-old. "They are a good bunch of lads and it is just a nice place to play football. All the lads are great to be fair.

"The are some good young lads and then there are a good bunch of older lads like Curo (Jamie Cureton), Colesy (Danny Coles) and Pat (Baldwin).

"We are all obviously looking to get promoted and we will try and pull together to do that.

"We are quietly confident, without being over-confident. We had a little blip (in October), but we picked up in November against some good teams."

Doherty is currently out injured, having tweaked his hamstring in City's 1-0 loss to Rotherham United at the end of November.

However, he expects to return soon and, while he is hoping to get in as many games as possible between now and the end of the season, Doherty isn't looking too far beyond that.

"I'm looking to play as many times as I can and help they team when I can," he said.

"I will take it as it is at the minute and hopefully see what the manager says at the end of the season."

Speaking about Doherty's decision to stay on at St James's Park, Tisdale said: "I'm pleased that he has extended his contract until the end of the season. Tommy has settled in very well. He is an experienced player, but he has got a very competitive instinct.

"He is a fabulous footballer and a terrific chap to have in the squad. We enjoy his company and we are very glad we have him. He has definitely added something to the squad this year.

"When he has played for us he has been a real asset. I think, when he has come back from his little injury at the moment, there will be a lot more to come from him in the second half of the season."
